Argentina
Our Argentine corporate offices are located in beautiful downtown Buenos Aires, a city of 13 million inhabitants, one of the world's 15 largest cities and the second largest in South America. Located on the southern shore of Rio de la Plata, its port is one of the busiest in South America. To the west of Buenos Aires is Pampa Húmida, the most productive agricultural region of Argentina.
Argentina is one of the world's major agricultural producers and exporters of honey, soybeans, sunflower seeds, maize and wheat. Patagonia is noted for its cattle and sheep raising and is the world's fifth largest wine producer. Of importance to the economies of both the city and the nation are the leading manufacturing sectors of food processing, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, motor vehicles, and farming equipment.
The first commercial oil discovery took place in 1907, near the town of Comodoro Rivadavia. Since that time Argentina has become a net oil exporter, but prudent oil and gas forecasters predict Argentina to become a net importer within three to five years. The primary oil and gas basins are concentrated in Patagonia, with lesser basins in the far north and on Tierra del Fuego.
Argentina specifically, and South America more generally, has become a focal point of Central's diversification in the Americas. As the economy of Argentina has undergone periods of expansion and contraction over the past twenty years, Central has recognized the potential and has benefitted from timely, but carefully planned investments at attractive prices. Centrals Argentina S.A. and its Argentine affiliates have acquired interests in and operations of four oil and gas fields in Argentina. All four fields are located in the San Jorge (South) and Neuquen (North) Basins of Patagonia. Central's approximate daily production is 1800 BOEPD of sweet crude with minor amounts of lease use gas. In addition, all the fields have substantial infill drilling potential. The Southern fields possess an attractive potential for steam flooding at very shallow depths. The Northern property is an excellent candidate for polymer injection, previously successful on a limited scale, but abandoned due to low commodity prices. Gas reserves on this property are sufficient to power future electrical generation facilities, resulting in a significant savings to lease operating expenses.
